A scam I experienced in my personal life was where I received messages saying that I had unpaid traffic violations and that I needed to pay by a certain date or I would have a warrant sent out for my arrest. The messages seemed elaborate and serious which made them quite scary at first glance. They included threats and warned me about legal action if the message was ignored.
The purpose of the scam was to pressure me into urgently sending money. The scam relies on fear which makes people act fast and ill advised. By acting as the law/government they try and get the victim to think its an emergency and from a trusted source.
Looking back and analyzing the message I see that there a few ways that I could have confirmed that it was fake. First, I could have checked official sources to see if it was from a credible, known source. Second, I could have remembered that legal notices like that are normally sent through mail and not a random text. Third, the threatening messages should have been a clear sign that the message was not an official, regulated message. If something is urgent and trying to scare you it is normally a scam.
Overall, this experience showed me how important it is to stay calm and analyze a message before just acting. Scams like this one are crafted to take advantage of fear and real life circumstances, but taking the time to evaluate and check for credibility can prevent you from falling victim to them.
